Make a plan or plan to fail....Use storage space wisely, this will save money and time. Most used items place in the front.
To begin your preparation of storing your items--Have items needed such as tape, boxes, packing materials, markers, furniture/mattress covers.
Fragile items should be packed with protecting materials such as glass crates, packing paper, bubble wrap, dish sets, glass sets, store in sturdy containers and always label containers or boxes "Fragile" on all sides.
Sort & Save--Donate items you don't need.
Record where items are placed so they can be retrieved quickly and easily.
Keep written inventory as you pack.
Store the most valuable items toward the rear of the unit.
Mark boxes with clear labels on all four sides of box.
Stack items vertically, heaviest items on the bottom with lighter items on top. All boxes should be sturdy and able to close, thereby making it possible to stack safely. Tape boxes securely, seal with packing tape.
Large boxes should be used for lighter weight items, small boxes for heavier items.
To avoid stress and strain to body and limbs do not overload boxes.
When stacking or retrieving items, use safe equipment such as step stools, ladders or other means which are sturdy.
When possible break down furniture to allow more space in unit. Items can be placed in empty spaces such as dresser drawers, baskets, curio cabinets/drawers, appliances etc be sure air can circulate through appliances.
When disassembling items tie together parts with tape or twine. Screws and bolts can be stored in Ziploc bags and taped to item they belong to.
To store washer in cold weather--- Before disconnecting washer, purchase one gallon of RV anti-freeze, pour in washer run through the pump on spin cycle to prohibit freezing.
Place blankets or towels on or between furniture to prevent scratches and dings.
Leave small amount of space between wall and the stored goods for ventilation. Leave an aisle in center of unit that you may easily reach items on both sides and all the way to the back of unit.
Landscaping and garden tools can be placed in trash cans or other bin type containers .
Use wardrobe boxes to hang clothing, draperies or other fabrics that need to be crease-free.
Empty small machines which contain gas to prohibit odors.
AVOID using garbage bags...garbage bags provide no protection from bumps. Items may get mildew from lack of ventilation.
Use blankets, tarp, or pallets on concrete floors so the stored items are protected from the concrete.
Cover stored items with dust covers, plastic, or other materials to protect from dust and moisture.
All mattresses should be placed upright with support.
BE AWARE: It is unlawful to store hazardous, toxic, explosive, corrosive, or combustible materials such as gasoline, solvents, paints etc.
When vacating unit, remove all items, sweep out unit, and take your lock with you to ensure deposit refund.
